Bethany UMC NewOrleans

About Bethany UMC New Orleans

In 1957, the Methodist Church and 23 charter members created Bethany UMC in New Orleans' Ponchartrain Park. Bethany is the largest African-American Methodist congregation in the Louisiana Conference. Reverend Hadley R. Edwards has been the senior pastor at Bethany for fourteen years.

Pastor Edwards has led the Bethany UMC Congregation in its outreach to the greater New Orleans community.

However, hurricane Katrina's broken levees put Bethany under eleven feet of water for three weeks. Bethany's congregation was scattered to 23 states. In March 2006, Bethany held its reunion Sunday service in it's cleaned but unrestored sanctuary.

By October 2006, Bethany dedicated its restored sanctuary and celebrated its 49th Anniversary. Bethany UMC is back, bigger and better! Bethany celebrated its 53rd anniversary October 24, 2010.
